Concerns regarding Occupational, Health and Safety at the Mountsberry Heights Community Library

We understand that parents’ have concerns regarding this Easters school holiday activities and have attempted to address some of those concerns within this blog.

During the renovations the building was required to meet all the standards for OHS .  We have specifically created rooms in the building for children’s activities ensuring any sharp edges are covered, power outlets have covers and will not allow small fingers to be poked into them.  Tables and chairs in the children’s area have been purchased for durability and stability in mind.

In regard to the activities planned for this Easter school holidays, during the face painting activity we will be using “Kryolan” face paint. For those concerned parents their website is:

Parents are welcome during the movie activity, but if they are not able to or wish to stay, they can be assured that the children will be monitored at all times, with one or more librarians in the room throughout the movie.

The numbers for each activity are restricted due to the “staff to child ratio”, which is why parents are requested to book their place, to avoid being disappointed.

A new bonus to being in our newly renovated building, is that we were able to address and fix some OHS issues that we had previously.  One of those was that we ensured that all our new computers in our building were connected to power points that were surge protected.

A few Tips for using the library computers for staff and patrons:
  •  Ensure you take regular exercise away from your computer
  •  Make sure that you sit correctly at the workstation
  • Ensure that the lighting is bright enough for you, so that you reduce the risk of eye strain

If you should have any concerns, please address them to the Manager, Lara Cole or the Senior Librarian Cathryn Lee-Maddison.

Saturday 30th March 2013, Book Club Meeting

Thanks go to the head librarian for allowing book club members to meet at her home during the libraries recent renovations. The book club were lucky to be the first to use one of the new meeting rooms and all who attended were high in praise for the facilities.
Book Club members at head librarians home, enjoying tea, coffee and good books

The book club meet the last Saturday of each month and discuss the book that they have all just read.  The members pay a small fee of $5.00 each month with a gold coin donation going towards tea, coffee and biscuits or cake.

This months book was The Life of Pi by Yann Martel. This story is about a young boy called Piscine Molitor "Pi" Patel. He survives 227 days after a shipwreck while stranded on a boat in the Pacific Ocean with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker

This book received many different reviews and generated a good discussion. The books are graded between 1 -5 with the general consensus being that most people enjoyed the book and would be interested in reading other stories written by the same author.

During this months book club meeting we enjoyed some lovely finger food with our tea and coffee, to celebrate the opening of this beautiful building.
Thank you to all our book club members for coming.  Anyone interested please contact the library on its main phone number or email mountsberrylibrary@bigpond.com

Don't forget our next meeting is on Saturday the 27th April 2013. We will be talking about this months book which is The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne.

Update to recent renovations to our local library

A big thanks to the Local Council and all who have helped in the renovations and refurbishments to the beautiful building that was kindly donated by the Mountsberry Family Trust. The renovations have now been completed and the opening ceremony was a big success with a large turnout from all of the community. Members of the Mountsberry family were present to view the cutting of the ribbon and to see the Mayor officiate in the placement of a plaque to commemorate the event.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
The Library officially re-opened 4 weeks ago and since then the library has been very busy organising new events and workshops. From homework help for the local schools to author talks and workshops for the school holidays.

We have been very lucky to be able to update our facilities and have added new computers, for staff and community users; as well as adding two new meeting rooms which have electronic projection screens and room to host a meeting for up to 20 people.

The Libraries new opening hours are Monday to Thursday 8am till 5pm; Friday to Saturday 8am till 9pm; Sunday is open between 11am and 3pm.  To book a computer register on-line or ring 08 9432 9281 or talk to library staff at the front desk.

I hope you enjoy our brand new Mountsberry Heights Community Library.
